Spring Texas Community Information
Spring became a trading post in 1838, but by the mid-1800s the actual town of Spring was platted by the Houston and Great Northern Railroad in 1873. Legend has it that the reason Spring got its name is associated with the railroad and the “spring thaw” causing the rail crew to refer to their quarters as the Spring camp. The original roundhouse for the Houston area was in Spring and 14 track yards were added by 1902. Spring flourished.
The school district that bears the Spring name continues to grow in an urban area of Harris County. They offer 30 campuses, including two high schools classified as 5A as well as all schools for all other grade levels down to pre-kindergarten. Spring ISD uses technology to educate students and increase their safety. All campuses are connected with high-speed fiber and offer filtered Internet access. Classrooms are outfitted with ceiling-mounted projectors and each school is equipped with Smart Boards and various multimedia devices. Advanced technology is also used to identify campus visitors and verify when and where elementary students get on and off their school buses. The District focuses on being fiscally responsible in all areas. For the fourth consecutive year, Spring ISD has earned a rating of superior achievement from the state of Texas.
Many say Spring owes its resurgence to a big, juicy hamburger. In 1949 Viola Burke’s Spring Cafe, known for “the best food and slowest service anywhere” attracted retailers to the surrounding area. The beginning of the restoration of what was to be known as “Old Town Spring” began around 1979. The number of merchants in the 10-square-block area has grown from 10 merchants in 1980 to over 150 today. Located near the original rail yards, the quaint turn of the century town is composed of shops, restaurants, museums, and art galleries. The Victorian-style buildings add to the nostalgic feeling of having "stepped back in time". Over the years, local landowners have relocated buildings from the fields and farms around Houston and rented them to shop keepers. Since these structures are from the original time period of the town, they only add to the ambiance.
